Inverted Barcodes
An inverted barcode is printed using white lines on a black background; basically, the reverse of a standard black-on-white barcode. Laser scanners are NOT able to read inverse barcodes. However, many 2D imaging scanners are able to read them easily.

A common use for inverse barcodes is in retail. An inverse barcode looks more attractive than a standard one. What's more, graphic designers use this technique to match the style of packaging by blending the barcode seamlessly with the product. In industrial applications, inverse codes help with reading Direct Part Marks (DPM). A DPM is often produced by etching the code onto the part directly.
