Zebra ZeOn-demand RFID High Temperature Indicator (HTI)

ZeOn-demand Printable Indicators offer an easy-to-read environmental indicator on a thermal printable label, providing insight into an item’s exposure to environmental conditions. Previously all ZeOn-demand indicators have been visual. These RFID indicators can be read without line of sight using any RFID reader. These indicators can be incorporated into any custom RFID tag.

What problem does the RFID HTI address?

High temperatures during a product’s journey, can impact the quality and/or performance of products, but temperature conditions during shipping can be volatile and unknown and manual reporting may be unreliable.

  • High temperatures can cause safety, quality, or efficacy issues. These issues may not always be visible. This product serves use cases in food, cosmetics, and specialty logistics applications requiring temperature monitoring solutions.

  • This indicator allows you to audit and improve your supply chain, provide visibility of potential issues, and use this insight to differentiate your products.

  • This data is not proprietary and is standards-based. Any RFID reader can read by looking at the EPC memory.

  • Your Data is yours. There are no subscription costs.

  • When a pre-defined high temperature (XXC / XXX F) has been exceeded, a physical change occurs. Users of this product define the temperature threshold when quoting and purchasing.

  • This physical change is permanent and may be read by existing UHF RFID infrastructure.

  • The UHF inlay also contains EPC and User data fields which may contain information relevant to the application.

  • The response is binary and only tells you if a temperature has been exceeded. Not when, by whom, for how long, or the temperature threshold that was exceeded.

  • Note: The indicator is “always on” and care must be taken that it is stored appropriately.

Technical Details

Read the EPC location @200h (tamper-evident) to determine if pre-defined temperature value has been exceeded.

Antenna

  • Single dipole

  • Specialty – Tuned for General Purpose use cases with a secondary loop which gives the user insight into if a pre-defined temperature has been exceeded.

  • 95 mm x 22 mm (3.74” x 0.87”)

Read Range

  • Air - 8.5m FCC; 10m ETSI

This product responds to high temperature exposure over time. Temperatures above 37C start the change and accumulate at an increasing rate the further you exceed 37C. This is shown here:

Temperature vs Response Time

Product Performance at 40 C

Accuracy Maximum Time for Response No response All respond
40C +/- 3C 2 hrs 37C (99F) 43C (109F)

Label Information

  • Minimum label size – 4” x 2.5”

  • Thermal Transfer Synthetic materials recommended

  • Temperatures available – 40 C (104 F). Please inquire about additional temperatures.

  • Recommended storage conditions

    • Climate controlled shipment and storage to prevent exceeding the pre-defined temperature threshold

    • Recommended storage below 30 C (86 F)

    • Best when stored at 22 C (72 F) @ 50% RH.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I determine if a product exceeded a pre-defined temperature?

Read the EPC location @200h (tamper-evident) to determine if pre-defined temperature value has been exceeded. The tag will provide a binary response and only tells you if a temperature has been exceeded.

The RFID High Temperature Indicator’s response is time AND temperature dependent. Being further above the predefined temperature will cause a quicker response, and being closer to the temperature will cause a slower response. The time/temperature response curve and discussion in the Temperature Accuracy section is illustrative of this. Please test to determine suitability in the application.
